".... the very little bit that I just read from the website of the book seems quite good well balanced stuff" -- SearchGuild.com Site Administrator
From the Publisher
With the Google IPO and the launch of the new Microsoft Algorithmic Search Engine the Internet is once again sexy and exciting. Post dot.com there is a new realism, the days of hubris and overpaid consultants are over. Today’s "Interpreneurs" want results. Gone are the endless advertising budgets for print and television.
The eCommerce battleground is the search engine.
From the Author
Although I have worked on a number of high profile websites over the last decade most of these have been supported by large off-line advertising budgets. I got into Search Engine Optimization when I saw my own website ranking less well in results than what I considered were poorer sites. By understanding how search engines work and what they consider important I was able to improve my rankings and dramatically improve the quality and number of visitors. A side effect was that the content and structure of the site were improved for visitors.
I wrote the ABC of SEO after I encountered the same problems coming up time and again with clients. Apart from a brief introduction the book is arranged as an A-Z. This makes for easy reference and treats all points equally. The book views optimizing websites for search engines as an ensemble, not as a search for the next short term "silver bullet". Whether you are planning on optimizing your own website or are gong to work with an external consultancy the ABC of SEO will give you a solid understanding of search engine marketing, the techniques, strategies, tricks and their pitfalls.

Excellent book![]()
The "ABC of SEO" is an alphabetic tour through the often obscure world and language of Search Engine Optimization and Marketing. All the important SEO subjects including competition analysis, keywords, links and page ranking algorithms are well and clearly covered. Although the A-Z format sounds dry the book is easy to read from cover to cover. The author provides many interesting anecdotes and asides and has an engaging writing style.
The "ABC of SEO" scores highly by pointing out both good and bad practices and is an ideal read for anyone thinking of hiring an outside optimization firm or who wants to put in place a methodology for a team working on websites. It would also be of great use to any web author or blogger wishing to optimize their own site.
The book does not assume any knowledge about search engine marketing beyond basic concepts of the Web and HTML. An ideal book for anyone wanting to better promote their website.

This is a surprising book. I bought on the recommendations here and elsewhere, but when I pulled it from the box I was underwhelmed by it's size. As has been implied here, I was guilty of unfairly judging the book by it's cover. Who'd have thought that a tiny little book could have such a high density of high quality material?
I've been surveying the SEO landscape, playing catch-up so to speak, and have bought a number of highly-rated SEO and "make money on Google" books recently. This little book provides a highly-concentrated bundle of insights, and is money well-spent. It's certainly up there with the O'Reilly books in terms of the density of useful information and clarity of thought.
My only negative note (a very, very mild one) is that it's structured, literally, with A-B-C chapters. Consequently, it's not a "sit down and read" book. It's more like an encyclopedia, which actually means it'll be a good reference book later on.
best for (nearly) beginners![]()
Being French and having set my own website a couple of years ago, I was looking for an "easy of access" book which would not only explain technical terms I'd come across before but also give the practical information you need when you try to develop/optimise your website.
I found David George's book extremely pleasant to read - no convoluted explanations here, it is a practical A to Z of terms used in the business with each time a more or less detailed explanation (depending on the complexity of the relevant term) of the meaning of specific terms as well as very practical examples.
It is a proper practical guide, i.e. you feel that someone is giving you his own method as to how to take such or such a step andhow to avoid pitfalls and overcome hurdles.
The good thing is that you don't have to read it from the first page onwards... but you may end up doing it like I did! If you already have a bit of knowledge (even basic) in the website optimization area, you will be able to easily find your way through this practical book.
I would say that we can all find what we are looking for in that book, the more experienced you are, the more you'll be able to scan it through to look for the most professional/technical tips. If you are not so experienced or need to improve your knowledge you will have pleasure in reading it from cover to cover. Mr George's sense of humour certainly helps the reader not only learn a lot from this book but also entertain him/herself.
I would therefore very happily recommend it.
